Tradiční básnictví provází nejen aspekt músické inspirace, ale i aspekt odbornosti ve smyslu techné: „… in pre-Platonic literature poets are portrayed both as sophoi, ,wise men‘, who have access to knowledge through the inspiration of the Muses, and as skilled craftsmen“ (P. Murray [vyd.], Plato on Poetry, str. 8). Platón pak nejen převrací toto tradiční pojetí inspirace, ale současně s tím velice vehementně upírá básníkům i jejich techné.
