V poznámce o roli biskupa (ἐπίσκοπος) Augustin uvádí: Graecum est enim atque inde ductum vocabulum, quod ille qui praeficitur eis quibus praeficitur superintendit, curam scilicet eorum gerens; σκοπός quippe intentio est; ergo ἐπισκοπεῖν, si velimus, Latine superintendere possumus dicere, ut intellegat non se esse episcopum, qui praeesse dilexerit, non prodesse (De civ. Dei, XIX,19 [CCL 48,686 n.]). G. O’Daly (Augustine’s Philosophy of Mind, str. 43) uvádí jako možné překlady výrazu intentio pojmy„tension“ (napětí), „extension“ (rozpětí), „mental concentration“ (myšlenkové soustředění).
